Rivers of the Katon-Karagai Nature Park -
Travel and jeep tours in Katon-Karagai district in Kazakhstan -
The Kara-Koba River is a picturesque mountain river that flows through the Katon-Karagai Nature Reserve, the river can be seen if you travel along the Austrian road (old Austrian), through the famous Burkhat Pass and the Alatai Pass. The river is very popular with fans of sport fishing, in the summer fishermen go to relax in the reserve and fish in the river, trout are found here. Also, the region itself, where this river flows, is very popular with travelers on 4x4 high-terrain jeeps. 5 bridges have been built across the Kara-Koba River, some of which are sometimes destroyed by water floods. To get to the valley of the Karakoba River, you need to drive along the Austrian road from the village of Urunhaika, climb the Alataysky pass and then descend into the river valley.
The Austrian road was built in the early 1960s by the efforts of two sapper battalions. They started construction from opposite sides: one from the village of Alekseevka, and the other from the valley of the Bukhtarma River, which originates in Lake Bukhtarma. During the work, the battalions moved towards each other until they connected the road sections. There is a widespread legend that the construction was carried out by captured Austrians, but this version is not confirmed in historical documents. Despite the lack of facts, the story of the "Austrian builders" continues to live and be passed down from generation to generation, adding a touch of mystery to the place.
