Amangeldy Imanov Square

Picturesque recreation area in the center of Almaty -

Historical space dedicated to the national hero of Kazakhstan -

Amangeldy Imanov Square is a small but significant green park in the heart of Almaty, located on Abylai Khan Avenue, opposite the Musrepov Theater. The area is known not only for its cozy atmosphere but also for being home to one of the city's oldest monuments – the bronze equestrian statue of Amangeldy Imanov, unveiled shortly after the Great Patriotic War.

Today, the square is a popular attraction for locals, tourists, school excursions, and history buffs. The landscape is decorated with neat paths, benches, shade trees, and open space around the monument, emphasizing the significance of this national hero.

In the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, Amangeldy Imanov Peak is very popular among outdoor enthusiasts. You can climb the peak with a mountain guide and have a wonderful time in the Almaty mountains.

History of the Square

The square was established in the late 1940s, when it was decided to improve the area around the new monument to Amangeldy Imanov. At that time, this area was just beginning to be actively developed, and the square itself became one of the city's first parking areas, associated with patriotic themes and the memory of heroes.

Gradually, the area around the monument was transformed into a full-fledged recreation area: paths, lawns, benches were added, and trees were planted – many of which still grow there today. Today, the square is a protected urban architectural landmark, preserving its mid-20th-century style.

Monument in the center of the square

The compositional center of the square is the equestrian bronze figure of Amangeldy Imanov, created by the sculptor Khasbulat Askar-Saryja.

The monument was one of the first monumental structures in post-war Almaty. The saddled figure conveys the energetic character of a batyr – his confident posture, composure, and determined facial expressions emphasize his personality as the leader of the 1916 popular uprising.

The name Amangeldy Imanov is engraved on the pedestal. The gray granite pedestal is decorated with patterns reflecting national motifs and the artistic language of his time.

Amangeldy Imanov – Who Was He?

Amangeldy Uderbayuly Imanov (1873–1919) was one of the most famous Kazakh folk heroes of the early 20th century. He led the 1916 national liberation uprising against the tsarist mobilization, organizing large resistance units in the Turgay region. Imanov became renowned as a talented commander, strategist, and symbol of the struggle for the rights of the common people.

After the revolution, he supported the new government, participated in establishing order, and defended the region during the Civil War. Despite his early death, his name has forever remained in the history of Kazakhstan: streets, towns, mountain peaks, and works of art have been named after him—and one of Almaty's key monuments has been erected in his honor.
