The Bukhtarma Reservoir is one of the largest artificial reservoirs in the world and a real pearl of Eastern Kazakhstan. Its creation is associated with the construction of the Bukhtarma Hydroelectric Power Station dam on the Irtysh River. Work began in 1953, and the process of filling the reservoir with water continued from 1960 to 1967, as a result of which the water level in Lake Zaysan rose by 7 meters. The reservoir covers an area of 5490 km², its length is 425 km, width - up to 35 km, average depth - about 9.6 m, and the volume of water reaches 53 km³. These indicators make it not only a powerful resource for energy, but also one of the most exciting natural attractions of the region.
The Bukhtarma Reservoir plays an important role in the economy and life of the region.
