Cosmonaut Peak (mountain route and hike)

Where to go on a weekend in the mountains of Almaty -

Guide to the Small Almaty Gorge -

Cosmonaut Peak (Kosmonavt) is a mountain peak located at an altitude of 3840 meters above sea level, in the Zailiysky Alatau Mountains. The peak is very popular among fans of active recreation and hiking in the mountains and guests of Almaty. The ascent to the peak begins from the Tuyuk-Su T1 glaciological station, which can be reached by a mountain road from the Shymbulak high-mountain base through the Mynzhilky tract. Usually, they first climb to Malysh peak (Kid), and then along the ridge reach Cosmonaut peak passing Vodolaz peak along the way. All three peaks are located close to each other at a distance of 500 meters from each other. It is necessary to move between the peaks along the mountain ridge with great caution and observe safety precautions. The mountain peaks are made of rock, the stones can be mobile. When descending the mountain, you also need to be extremely careful and cautious. We recommend climbing all three peaks in the summer, when there is a minimum amount of snow on the mountain slopes. From the top of the mountain, a beautiful mountain panorama opens up to the Ile-Alatau Mountain Park and such peaks as Molodezhny Peak and Titov Peak, which are located near the mountain route.

Monitor the weather and choose clear sunny days for your trip. During the hike, always stay in a group so that everyone is always in sight of each other, always wait for those who lag behind. Do not hike in the mountains at night or in the dark. Plan your time in the mountains wisely, try to return in the afternoon before dusk and complete darkness, be sure to consult with mountain guides about this. Use special sportswear and equipment for hiking in the mountains. Do not go to the mountains in flip-flops, slippers and light soft shoes, take care of your feet, your feet should be protected by reliable mountain shoes for trekking and hiking with ankle fixation. Do not forget about altitude sickness and the need for acclimatization in a mountainous area for a further comfortable stay in the mountains. Also, in the spring (May) there are ticks in the mountains, we recommend not visiting the mountains during this period.
