Manshuk Mametova Pass was named after Manshuk Mametova, the first Kazakh woman to be awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. She has become a symbol of courage and bravery. Manshuk died in October 1943 in the battles for the liberation of the city of Nevel in the Pskov region during the Great Patriotic War. At the age of only 20, she showed incredible resilience, replacing the deceased commander of a machine-gun crew and continuing to fire at the enemy, even being mortally wounded. Her feat became an example for millions of people, and her name is immortalized in the names of streets, schools and, of course, geographical features such as the pass in the mountains of the Trans-Ili Alatau.
