Abai Square is one of the central and symbolic places of the city, associated not only with the name of the great Kazakh poet, philosopher and educator Abay Kunanbayev, but also with the cultural life of the capital of southern Kazakhstan. In the summer, a fountain operates on the square, and benches for rest are installed around the square. The square was named in honor of Abai Kunanbayev, whose work has become an integral part of the spiritual heritage of Kazakhstan. The Abai monument rises above the square, which was erected here in 1960. The monument is made of bronze and granite, and the figure of Abai is presented in a majestic and wise image in full growth with a book in his hands, symbolizing his role as an educator, teacher and spiritual mentor of the people. The eastern part of the square is completely occupied by the building of the Palace of the Republic, which hosts various events. Next to the square is also the famous hotel "Kazakhstan", which is an architectural landmark of the Soviet Union.
