Pogrebetsky Pass is a mountain pass located at an altitude of 4050 meters above sea level in the Trans-Ili Alatau Mountains. The pass is very popular because it is located on a picturesque mountain route that leads to such mountain peaks as Pogrebetsky Peak and Lokomotiv Peak, and the route to both of these peaks through the pass goes along the famous Tuyuksu mountain glacier. The difficulty category of the route to the pass is 2A, and it starts from the high-mountain glaciological station Tuyuksu T1. You can get to the station from another high-mountain station, which is located below, this is the Shymbulak station, to it from the Medeo tract the Medeo-Chimbulak cable car leads. From Shymbulak station to Tuyuksu station T1 there is a mountain road through the Mynzhilky tract and the Vorota Tuyuksu tract.
Mikhail Pogrebetsky, after whom the pass is named, was one of the first explorers to study this region in detail. In the 1920s and 1930s, he organized several expeditions during which detailed maps of the Tien Shan were compiled and its glaciers were explored. The Pogrebetsky Pass has become an important route for climbers and scientists studying the highlands of Central Asia.
