Baluan Sholak Palace of Sports and Culture

Sports life of Almaty city and Almaty region -

Cultural life of the southern capital -

The Baluan Sholak Sports and Cultural Complex is one of the main sports and cultural centers of Almaty, well known to both residents and visitors. It combines a rich history, modern infrastructure and an atmosphere of great victories and bright events. This is a universal venue where both sporting events and concerts take place. The legendary Kairat hockey club plays its home matches here, as well as basketball, volleyball and various martial arts competitions. At the same time, it is one of the main concert venues of the city, where famous Kazakhstani and international artists perform.

Construction history and name

The idea of creating a large indoor arena in Almaty appeared in the middle of the 20th century, when the city was rapidly developing as a cultural and sports center for the whole of Kazakhstan. During the Soviet period, Almaty was called the "southern capital of sports," and it was obvious that a modern complex was needed here to host both national and international competitions.

The construction of the palace began in 1964, and in 1967 it opened its doors to the first spectators. It was a grandiose event, because at that time there was not a single such multifunctional sports facility in Kazakhstan.

The palace is named after Baluan Sholak (1864-1919), a legendary wrestler, singer, akyn and national hero. His name was not chosen by chance: Baluan Sholak symbolized the strength, honor and cultural heritage of the Kazakh people. So the arena got not just a name, but a majestic symbol of continuity and national pride.

Architecture and capacity

The architectural appearance of the palace is made in the style of Soviet modernism of the 1960s: massive geometric shapes, strict lines of the facade, large panoramic windows. It was originally conceived as a universal building for sports and cultural events.

The main hall can accommodate 5,000 spectators at sporting events and up to 7-8 thousand people during concerts. The spacious arena allows you to transform the space depending on the event: a hockey field, a basketball court, a concert stage or an exhibition hall.

Inside, the palace is equipped with locker rooms, training rooms, referees' rooms, a press center, conference rooms, VIP boxes and modern lighting, acoustics and ventilation systems.

Sports life

For decades, the palace has been the arena for many sports battles. They passed through here:

• USSR and Kazakhstan championships in ice hockey, basketball and volleyball;
• Major tournaments in boxing, wrestling, judo, sambo and taekwondo;
• Figure skating and ice hockey competitions, attracting thousands of spectators;
• International games and matches featuring the best athletes in the world.

The palace gained special importance in 2011, when it became one of the main arenas of the VII Asian Winter Games. Ice competitions were held here, and Almaty proved itself worthily in the international sports arena.

Many Kazakhstani boxing and wrestling champions entered this ring for the first time, and for hockey fans the palace has long been the "home arena".

Cultural events

The Sports Palace has never been limited to sports. Major cultural events have been held here since the opening:

• concerts of world and domestic stars (from Soviet pop idols to modern performers);
• Performances by renowned opera and ballet companies;
• international festivals, theatrical shows, circus programs;
• National holidays and city celebrations.

Such stars as Sofia Rotaru, Alla Pugacheva, Chris de Burgh, Modern Talking, Scorpions and many others performed here.

The palace has also become a venue for beauty contests, fashion shows, fairs and exhibitions, due to its versatility.

Reconstruction and modern appearance

In 2009-2010, the palace underwent a large-scale reconstruction, timed to coincide with the Asian Winter Games.

• The facade has been completely renovated, giving it a modern style.
• Replaced all engineering systems, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting.
• The stands have been made more comfortable and upholstered chairs have been installed.
• Acoustics and lighting equipment have been upgraded for world-class concerts.

After the reconstruction, the palace received a new look and began to meet international standards. Now it is one of the best arenas in the country, hosting sports and cultural events of the highest level.
