4-thousanders in the upper reaches of the Small Almaty Gorge -
Mountaineering in the Almaty Mountains -
Ordzhonikidze Peak is one of the most beautiful mountain peaks of the Trans-Ili Alatau, located in the Ile-Alatau National Park near Almaty. It is a popular place among climbers and mountain hikers, offering magnificent views, interesting routes and the opportunity to test your strength on steep mountain slopes. The height of the peak is about 4,410 meters above sea level, which makes it the highest peak of the Small Almaty Spur. The main routes to the summit start from the Tuyuksu Valley from the high-mountain glaciological station Tuyuk-Su T1 and lead through mountain glaciers, such as the Tuyuksu glacier and rocky areas that require good physical fitness and basic mountaineering skills. Climbing this peak requires accuracy and careful selection of the route, especially when passing through glacial zones. There are four mountain routes to the peak, two of them are of 4A difficulty category, one is of 3A difficulty category, and one is of 2B difficulty category. When hiking to the top of the mountain, it is necessary to set up one intermediate camp on the moraine of the Tuyuksu Needles glacier right under the mountain, then the next day at 5 am begin your ascent, so it takes at least three days to conquer the mountain peak. From the top of the mountain, a beautiful mountain panorama opens up to such natural attractions as the Tuyuksu Needle Peak, Partizan Peak, Soviet Peak, Left Talgar Gorge, Talgar Peak, the city of Almaty, etc.
Ordzhonikidze Peak was named after Grigory Konstantinovich Ordzhonikidze (1886-1937), a prominent Soviet politician and revolutionary who held high positions in the USSR government. Ordzhonikidze was known for his role in the industrialization of the country, especially in the development of heavy industry. During the Soviet era, his name was given to many objects, including cities, factories and mountain peaks. Interestingly, in the post-Soviet period, some geographical objects named after Soviet figures were renamed, but Ordzhonikidze Peak retained its name, becoming part of the historical heritage of the region.
