Space station on the Dzhusaly-Kezen pass

Research of cosmic particles and space in the mountains of Almaty -

One-day excursion to the space station in the Big Almaty gorge -

The space station (cosmos-station) is a high-altitude research laboratory for the study of cosmic particles arriving to us from space, and work is also carried out here to study high-energy physics based on cosmic radiation. The station was built on the Dzhusaly-Kezen pass in 1957 at an altitude of 3000 meters above sea level back in the USSR. All work at the station is under the control of the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Under the USSR, the station worked at full capacity, many scientists from all over the world came here, but after the collapse of the USSR, work stopped for a while, but then resumed again after agreements were reached between Kazakhstan and Russia. Currently, there are several buildings operating at the station, and special sensors that record cosmic radiation are also placed around the station, and scientists work at the station on a rotational basis.

An asphalt road leads from the city of Almaty to the space station, which can be reached by car. Next to the station is the Big Almaty Peak, to which outdoor enthusiasts constantly go on mountain hikes, and there is also the Tourist Peak, which can also be climbed. From the station, there is a trail to Lake Primul and Aleshkin Bridge. Down the road is the Tien Shan Astronomical Observatory and a little lower is the famous Big Almaty Lake, all the sights belong to the Ile-Ilatau Park and are located in the Big Almaty Gorge. From the Dzhusaly-Kezen Pass, you can go down to the neighboring Prokhodnoye Gorge and go to Alma-Arasan, where there are hot radon springs.
