The main intellectual center of the capital -
The country's largest digital repository and advanced technologies of the future -
The National Academic Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NAL RK), established in 2004 at the initiative of Nursultan Nazarbayev, is an architectural landmark of the left bank of the Ishim. Located next to the Baiterek monument, it symbolizes the nation's pursuit of enlightenment.
This is a modern information institution where a unique environment for scientists, students, and all literature lovers has been created on an area of 15,000 square meters. The five-story building became the country's first model of a new format multimedia library.
The library impresses not only with its form but also with its content: a unique "Telelift" monorail book delivery system has been implemented here, allowing a publication to be retrieved from the repository in just 5 minutes. NAL RK serves as the methodological center for the automation of all libraries in Kazakhstan, coordinating the "Kazakhstan National Electronic Library" (KazNEB) project.
It is a place where the rarest 16th-century manuscripts coexist under one roof with powerful server complexes storing terabytes of digital information.

History
The decision to establish the library was made by the Government of the RK on April 23, 2004. Although the official opening of the building took place in June 2004, the halls welcomed their first readers on September 10, 2005.
From the very beginning, the library was conceived as an institution of a new formation, focused on paperless technologies and accessibility of information from anywhere in the world. In 2007, the foundation of the electronic fund was laid, which is today considered the best in the republic.
A major milestone in development was the introduction of the "Telelift" system in 2010 – a 450-meter monorail that automated internal logistics. Over the years, the library has become a platform for major international events, such as the Reading Congress under the auspices of UNESCO.
Today, NAL RK serves more than 25,000 readers annually, remaining a key link in the implementation of the "Cultural Heritage" state program.
Information
The library's collection includes more than 1.5 million items, including books, audiobooks, microfiche, and special editions in Braille. Special pride is taken in the 13,000 rare exhibits and more than 30 private collections of prominent figures of Kazakhstan.
The total capacity of the repository is designed for 2.5 million copies. The building features 17 halls with 500 seats, including 9 specialized reading rooms.
Unique international centers are open to visitors: "American Corner," "Window on Korea," the Center for Indian Studies, and the German Literature Hall. The library provides a wide range of electronic services: from remote registration to the delivery of document fragments via email.
It also houses the Dissertation Fund of Kazakhstani scientists and a rich collection of art literature, including rare albums and sheet music.
Detailed description of the object
The library building is an architectural masterpiece whose curved facade resembles the spread of a giant book. Inside, the space is organized highly functionally: the first floor is dedicated to general halls and registration, while the upper levels house thematic sections.
The interiors of the reading rooms are decorated in calm tones conducive to concentration. Of particular interest is the Rare Editions Fund, which stores manuscripts in Arabic, Kazakh, and Russian.
One of the most mysterious attractions of the library is a 16th-century book bound in human skin. This ancient diary of an Italian notary in Latin is still studied by experts.
The modern part of the library is represented by a powerful server center and a digital content hall. The combination of such artifacts of the past with innovations like monorail delivery makes visiting the library fascinating even for those who rarely pick up paper books.
Architecture
The architectural appearance of NAL RK is a harmony of glass and concrete, embodying the openness of knowledge. The five-story building with an area of 15,000 square meters is designed to let in maximum natural light through panoramic windows. The "book" shape is not only symbolic but also allowed for a convenient layout of halls along the building's perimeter. The engineering solution of the "Telelift" system is integrated into the structure, piercing all floors and providing a seamless connection between the closed repository and the areas open to the public.
Legend
Among employees and regular readers, there is a legend of the "Wise Librarian." They say that at night, when the monorail system falls silent, one can hear the rustling of pages in the rare book halls – it is the spirits of great scientists of the past turning over their works.
The most famous legend is associated with the mysterious book in the leather binding: it is believed that whoever can decipher its hidden Latin meanings will gain the key to understanding all the financial flows of the world, for it was the diary of the most calculating notary in Italy.
Students also believe: if you come to the "Window on Korea" hall before an important exam and leave a small note with a wish there, the knowledge will be absorbed much faster.
For Astanans, the library is not just a storage of information, but a living organism keeping the secrets of centuries under the protection of modern technologies.
