History

The history of this famous place goes deep into the past, as in the XIX century, a well-known trading center of Akmolinsk called Karaotkel was located on the site of the modern philharmonic. Later, in the 1950s, the "Rodina" summer open-air cinema occupied this territory.

In the early 1960s, the active development of the virgin lands began in Tselinograd. The city was growing rapidly, and following a visit by the First Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee N. Khrushchev, for whose meeting no suitable hall could be found, a decision was made to build a large-scale Palace of Virgin Land Workers.
The new building, which became the landmark of the region, was officially opened in 1963. Its lobby was then decorated with a real botanical garden featuring exotic plants.

In 1982, the property was officially included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of republican significance. Over time, the complex underwent various changes.

In 1998, a large-scale reconstruction was carried out in the palace. The auditorium, originally designed for 2,500 seats, was reduced by almost a thousand seats for the greater comfort of visitors, and the building itself received its modern name "Congress Hall". For many years, the concert hall remained the main venue for congresses, exhibitions, and fairs.

In 2016, the facility was renamed the "Astana" Concert Hall, and today it bears the proud name of the Yerkegali Rakhmadiyev State Academic Philharmonic, symbolizing the continuity of musical traditions and respect for great cultural figures.

Information

The Y. Rakhmadiyev State Philharmonic is organized as a complex multifunctional space that includes several specialized halls, rehearsal areas, and administrative premises. Excellent conditions have been created here for large-scale symphonic programs, solo chamber evenings, theatrical performances, and children's educational lectures. For the comfort of guests, there are spacious, bright foyers decorated in a ceremonial style, historical interiors, and areas for audience relaxation during intermissions.

Special attention is paid by management and technical specialists to preserving the acoustic parameters of the building. The halls are equipped with high-quality sound and lighting equipment, allowing every nuance of live performance to unfold. For the convenience of visitors, experienced administrators work in the lobbies, and information boards with posters are available. During the concert season, the philharmonic hosts hundreds of events, attracting a dedicated audience and new guests to the city.

Detailed description of the venue

The well-thought-out infrastructure of the philharmonic includes the following original locations:

• Main Concert Hall – a spacious hall with magnificent acoustics, a comfortable amphitheater, and a large stage designed to accommodate full symphonic and folk orchestras.

• Chamber Hall – a cozy room with a special intimate atmosphere, oriented towards solo concerts, performances by small ensembles, and poetry evenings.

• Ceremonial Foyer – a grand lobby with high ceilings, monumental columns, and panoramic windows, where the famous indoor botanical garden was previously located.

• Rehearsal Bases – specialized classrooms and halls assigned to the leading ensembles of the philharmonic, where daily preparations for concert programs take place.

• Ticket Office Area – an equipped sector in the entrance group of the building, where visitors can get detailed consultations on the repertoire and purchase paper tickets.

Architecture

The architectural solution of the building is based on the principles of Soviet monumentalism with the subsequent delicate integration of modern finishing elements. The project was developed by talented Latvian architects and implemented in record time to meet the needs of the growing Tselinograd.
The highlight of the engineering architecture is the large grand staircase and the colonnade of the entrance group, which emphasize the status of the main musical temple of the right bank.

During the modernization of the property, durable building materials were used: granite, noble marble, and modern composite panels. The architectural ensemble blends harmoniously into the historical buildings of the old center of Astana.

Legend

A heartwarming legend about an old grand piano and the acoustic spirit of the philharmonic halls lives among local musicians and dedicated listeners. It is said that if a young performer, before stepping onto the main stage, enters the empty dark hall for a moment, listens to the silence, and mentally greets the great masters of the past who have performed here since the days of the Palace of Virgin Land Workers, the stage will grant them extraordinary confidence, and the instrument will sound uniquely clear and soul-stirring.

Another legend is connected with the historical past of this place: it is believed that the commercial spirit of the ancient Karaotkel center still helps the philharmonic successfully host large-scale exhibitions and international fairs, bringing good luck to all organizers of cultural events.

Conclusion

The Y. Rakhmadiyev State Philharmonic is a magnificent cultural bridge connecting the glorious history of past decades with the modern dynamic life of the musical capital. A visit to this academic center allows city guests to feel the depth of Kazakh folk music and the grandeur of world classics in a single concert evening.
The philharmonic remains the main reference point for cultural leisure and aesthetic education on the right bank. Tourist routes through the old town frequently include this point in their programs, allowing everyone to fill their day with vivid emotions and touch authentic art.
