Fort Shevchenko is a city on the shore of the Caspian Sea, the settlement here was founded in 1846 as the Novopetrovskaya fortress. In 1857, the fortress was renamed Fort Alexandrovsky and in 1939 the city was renamed Fort Shevchenko. The main attractions of the city of Fort Shevchenko are; the Shevchenko Museum, the remains of the buildings of the Shevchenko fortress, the Shevchenko monument, there is an Armenian chapel in the city. Also on the territory of the city there are remains of ancient settlements and an architectural complex of the XVI century. The region's economy is dominated by fishing.
